The lights over the church parking lot come on in a stagger, the far pole first, then the middle one, then the one above her car, and she knows the order by heart because she is always still out here when it happens.
Wednesday. Youth night. Two kids on the curb with their hoods up, waiting on a ride. Her engine is off, the heater ticking as it cools, first properly cold night of the fall, and she has not moved.
On the passenger seat is a shoebox with a slot cut in the lid and silver marker down the side. Fourteen index cards in it tonight. She reads them at her kitchen table and answers them out loud the following Wednesday, and she is genuinely good at it. Twenty six years old, and the students bring her what they would not bring their parents.
Her phone is face up in her lap. The group chat is called Leaders, with a rocket emoji somebody added years ago that nobody has taken off. She types:
Hey. Real question. When we say somebody is born again, what is actually happening? Like what IS it. I feel like I should know this by now.
She reads it twice, watches the cursor blink, then holds the backspace down and lets the whole sentence run backwards off the screen, the way you take a poster off a wall without tearing it, until the box is gray again and says Message.
Four times. She could tell you the four nights.
Three weeks ago a card said, in careful capital letters, HOW DO YOU KNOW IF IT TOOK. She answered it well. She said the new birth is God's work and not a mood, and that nobody is asked to remember it, the same way nobody remembers the first one. Every word of that was true. She does not know what it means.
And she has never asked anybody, because she is the one who gets asked. A youth leader with a question is fine. A youth leader who cannot say what the words on her own shoebox are for is a problem, and problems get handled kindly, in a meeting, by people who love you.
You know the shoebox. Yours might be a group chat, or a title on a lanyard, or a name people say when they need an answer fast. And you know the message you keep typing and deleting, and the exact reason it has never once been sent.

A ruler of the Jews said it out loud
Let me put a man in your passenger seat, because Scripture put him there first, and I want you to hear the shape of what he said.
His name was Nicodemus. A Pharisee, a ruler of the Jews, a member of the council, the kind of man other people came to when they wanted a ruling. He had a question he was never going to raise in daylight, so he crossed a city after dark and knocked (John 3:2). Not a coward. He is the one man on that council who went. He opened by honoring the person he had come to, and then he asked, and asked again, in four words.
Nicodemus answered and said unto him, How can these things be?John 3:9
That is the mechanics question. Not is it true. Not do I want it. How does this actually work. It is the same question that has been typed and deleted four times in a parking lot.
You are welcome to ask the mechanics question, and you were welcome to ask it long before you had any idea what the answer was. John 3:9 sits in the record with no rebuke printed underneath it and no footnote about the standing of the man who said it, and the Holy Spirit is the one who lifts a two thousand year old night off a page and sets it down in a cold car with the engine off.
And watch what Jesus did with it. He did not send him away for a better question. He did not mention the visit to a soul. He answered him, and to that one man at that hour He said the sentence the world has since learned by heart: God so loved the world that He gave His only Son.
You have somewhere to take the message you keep deleting, and it is not a place that forwards, screenshots or repeats. His word kept the record of that night visit on purpose, so the door would be visibly open at that hour, and it is His Spirit carrying it into this particular parking lot tonight.
Nobody remembers the first one either
She thinks the not knowing is the problem. It is not. The problem is what she believes it proves: that a woman who teaches a thing she cannot explain is running a small, quiet, ongoing fraud, and every card she has answered well is one more entry in a file that gets read out at the end.
But consider what a birth is. Nobody arranges their own, nobody attends their own delivery in any way they could describe afterwards, and no person alive has been asked to account for the mechanism by which they came to be here at all. John says it about this second birth in the passive voice, deliberately: born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God (John 1:13).
You are carried by a birth you did not perform, and you were never the one on the hook for how it works. It is written that this one is of God and not of the will of man, and the same Spirit who moved over the water before there was anything at all to look at is the one moving in this.
A midwife explains a birth. She does not accomplish one. That is not a loophole for lazy teaching, it is the doctrine itself, and it is why the doctrine is good news for the person who has to teach it.
It is already settled whose doing the new birth is, and it was settled long before anybody asked you to explain it. Scripture is what says of God rather than of man, and it is the Spirit, not the confidence in a teacher's voice, who does the thing the sentence describes.
The wind over the parking lot
Jesus answered the mechanics question with weather, which I have always loved Him for.
The wind bloweth where it listeth, and thou hearest the sound thereof, but canst not tell whence it cometh, and whither it goeth: so is every one that is born of the Spirit.John 3:8
He did not hand the man a diagram. He handed him a sound, and a sound is not a lesser answer, it is a different kind of certainty. I work with music, so let me say it the way I know it. A room knows the exact second a key change lands. Every shoulder in it moves. Not one of them could name the interval, and not one of them is wrong.
Then comes the line people quote as if it were a slap. Art thou a master of Israel, and knowest not these things? (John 3:10). Look at where it was said: to his face, in private, by the one person entitled to ask it, and never once repeated to the council. That is a teacher being told, kindly, that this thing is not in the category of things you master first and are admitted to second.
You are free to hold something you cannot diagram, and you have that on the authority of the answer He actually gave. He gave a sound instead of a chart, and it is the Spirit who blows where He wishes and who is not standing by for anybody's comprehension before He moves.
And the question cost him nothing. He keeps his seat, turns up again in that same council insisting a man be given a fair hearing (John 7:50-51), and at the end carries seventy five pounds of myrrh and aloes to a tomb in daylight (John 19:39).
You have the answer He gave that night, word for word, kept and handed forward, and you were reckoned worth writing it down for. That is the reason John 3 exists at all, and the Spirit takes what is written and makes it living for one reader at one particular hour.
Here is what happens now, in the front seat, with the pole lights on and the phone still face up in your lap.
The question comes out of the drafts and gets said. Not on Sunday, not in the group chat, not once better wording has been found for it. Here, tonight, out loud, to the One who took a night visit from a ruler of the Jews and never handed him back to his colleagues. Nicodemus did not understand first, and he was answered anyway, at length, generously.
You are received in a cold car with the engine off, question and standing and shoebox and all, and He is answering rather than forwarding. That is not my kindness, it is John 3 in full, and it is the Spirit who blows where He wishes and does not check anybody's credentials at the door.
What He does with the question afterwards is His business, and He is unhurried about it. He answered a man in one night and then let the answer work in him for years, all the way to a tomb and seventy five pounds of spices in daylight.
This is yours: a night visit that Scripture entered on purpose, an answer that was never taken back, and a door that opens at the one hour you actually have free. It is written and it is kept, and the Spirit who carried it onto a page is the one carrying it to you, so what happens next is only speaking, and never qualifying.
Declare this over yourself
Say these three out loud, right where you are sitting, before you start the engine. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, and that is the whole reason you have standing to speak, not the title and not a question finally answered. Scripture is the ground under the words and the Holy Spirit is the one who carries them, so a voice that shakes carries them as well as a steady one. What He does with it afterwards is His, spoken the way His Son taught us to speak it, not my will, but Thine.
- Message I have typed four times and deleted four times, you are going where a ruler of the Jews took his. Scripture says he came to Jesus by night and was answered and not announced, and I am taking you to that same door with the engine off.
- Fear that I have been faking it in front of teenagers, get out of this car, in the name of Jesus. Jesus put the sharp question to a teacher of Israel in private and never repeated it to the council (John 3:10), and the Spirit who blows where He wishes is not grading me before He moves.
- Lord, You received a ruler at night and You gave him more than he came for, and it is written that whoever comes to You is never cast out, so You are receiving an ordinary voice in a parking lot the same way. I am asking You now, in my own words, with Your Spirit carrying them, and the shoebox stays right where it is on the seat while I do it.
