Quietly Reborn1 John 5:1

Four Nights on the Third Row

This message is for the woman on the third row of a revival week who has been prayed over four nights running by people convinced she needs to get saved for real this time, and who has never known how to say she already is

The paper fan is from the funeral home two blocks over, and by Thursday the wooden handle has gone soft where she holds it.

Third row, aisle seat, same seat all week, because that is where her family has sat since before she was born. The windows are propped open and the ceiling fans are turning and it does not help. The visiting preacher is good, genuinely good, and the singing has been the kind that takes the roof off, and there is a folding table in the back with a coffee urn and a plate of somebody's lemon squares nobody has touched since Tuesday.

It is night four. She knows what happens at the end of night four, because it happened at the end of nights one, two and three.

They come for her. Her aunt first, then the woman who runs the youth group, then two more she barely knows, and they put their hands on her back and her shoulders and they pray, hard, with love, with real fire, and somewhere in it somebody says it again the way they have said it every night: tonight is the night, baby. Tonight you get it for real.

And she stands there with her eyes closed and her fan in her hand, and inside her chest a sentence starts and stops, starts and stops, because she does not know how to finish it. She wants to say: I already have. But then what? Then they ask when. Then she has to describe it. And what she has is a Tuesday in a parking lot when she was eight years old, in the back of her mother's car outside a grocery store, when she said something to God in her own small words and meant every syllable of it, and then her mother came out with the bags and they drove home and had dinner. That is it. There is no night. There is no before. There is nothing anybody could put on a program, and she has learned across thirty five years that if you cannot produce a story people will kindly assume you do not have the thing.

So on night four she stands and lets them pray, because they love her, and because saying anything else would take an hour and hurt somebody.

You know the third row. Yours might be a small group that circles back to you every few months, or a mother who still asks in a certain tone, or a hand that lands on your shoulder the moment the music slows. And you know the sentence that starts and stops in your chest, and how tired you are of not having a way to finish it.

Four Nights on the Third Row

What John actually wrote down as the mark

Let me take you to a letter written to a whole church full of people in exactly your seat, because that is what the first letter of John is.

Something had split that congregation. A group had gone out from them, and on the way out they had made it plain that the ones staying behind were missing something: a deeper knowledge, a further experience, an upper room the rest had never got into. And the people who stayed were rattled. They started auditing themselves. So John, an old man by then, wrote to steady them, and he did not write back a bigger experience. He wrote them a mark they could read.

Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ has been born of God.1 John 5:1

You are looking at a sentence that puts the birth behind the believing and not out in front of it, and it is written in the perfect tense on purpose. John does not describe a night, a temperature or a memory. He points at what a person holds about Jesus Christ and says the birth is God's already finished work under it, and the Holy Spirit is the one who set that clause down in that order so a rattled church could stop measuring itself against people who had left.

Read the letter and you will see him do it again and again. He tells them they have an anointing from the Holy One and already know the truth, and that nobody needs to come and supply them with what they are missing. He is not scolding the people who left. He is steadying the ones who stayed, and the way he steadies them is by naming what is already theirs rather than by staging something new.

You have a written mark instead of a memory to produce, and that is not a lowered standard, it is the standard John gave. Scripture never once makes a person's account of their own beginning the evidence, and the Spirit who inspired that letter knew exactly how many people would arrive at it with nothing to describe.

Four nights of hands that meant every word

Now I want to say something about the people praying over you, and I am going to say it as one of them.

I preach in rooms like that one. My whole musical language is the shout and the organ and the tambourine on the two and the four, and I have stood behind more people than I could count with my hand between their shoulder blades, believing God for them at the top of my lungs. Those women on night four are not villains and I will not let anybody make them into villains. They love her. The fire in that room is real fire.

But love can be certain about something it was never given to decide. And here is the plain thing: nothing in Scripture puts the settling of a person's new birth in the hands of the row behind them. Jesus dealt with the most famous seeker in the New Testament alone, at night, with no crowd, no music and nobody keeping score, and what He told him was that the wind blows where it wishes and you hear the sound of it and cannot tell where it comes from or where it goes.

You are not a project on anybody's fourth night, and it is written that the Spirit blows where He wishes and reports to no schedule. That is His word about His own way of working, and the same Spirit who moved over the face of the deep has never once needed a room to reach a temperature before He would move in somebody.

So let them pray. Genuinely. Let the hands stay. A woman being loved noisily by four people who want everything of God for her is not in a bad situation. You have room to receive their love without receiving their diagnosis, and the word draws that line for you long before I do. Paul told the Colossians to let nobody disqualify them, and the Spirit of truth is not the author of the small cold voice that says everybody here can see something in you that you cannot see.

Nobody is asked to produce a before

Here is the part that has been quietly costing you, and I want it named out loud.

Somewhere along the way your own beginning got treated as a case file with a missing document. Every time somebody stands up and says I was thirty two and I was on the floor of a jail cell, the arithmetic runs: they have a before, I have a parking lot and a grocery bag, therefore theirs is real and mine is unproven. That arithmetic is not from God, and it does not appear anywhere in the New Testament, and the people who taught it to you did not mean to.

Watch where Paul puts it:

he saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit.Titus 3:5

Not because of works done by us. That includes the work of remembering. It includes the work of having a good story, the work of crying at the right moment, the work of being able to date it. His own mercy is the cause, and the renewing is the Holy Spirit's doing, which means it was never filed under things a person supplies.

You were on the receiving end of anything God has done in you, and that is written down as mercy rather than as achievement. Scripture hands the whole action to Him: His mercy, His washing, His Spirit renewing, and not one clause of it turns and asks the reader for a date.

And notice that Jesus never handed anybody a ruling either. He told Nicodemus what the new birth is and left the man to walk home in the dark holding it. You have a Lord who explains rather than certifies, and it is written that He knew what was in a person without being told, and His Spirit is the one who does the assuring in a heart, at His own pace and not the room's.

The breakthrough

Come back to the third row, because I did not bring you here to leave you standing with your eyes closed and a sentence stuck in your chest.

Everything you need is already written and none of it is on you to produce. The word says everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ has been born of God. The word says He saved us according to His own mercy by the washing of regeneration and the renewing of the Holy Spirit. The word says the Spirit blows where He wishes. There is no clause anywhere about a night, a decade, a volume level or a story worth telling.

So stop auditing. Not tonight only. Altogether. The audit was never asked of you, and it has been eating the very thing it was trying to verify.

You have one sentence to say and it is the whole mark John gave: that Jesus is the Christ, and that you believe Him. It is written in that order, birth behind believing, and it is the Holy Spirit, not the strength of your feeling about it, who makes a written line living in a person on a hot Thursday in the third row.

And what God does with it is His and not yours and not theirs. You are held by the One who began it, and it is written that He who began a good work will complete it, and His Spirit is the deposit and the seal of that, not your ability to describe the day it started.

Declare this over yourself

Say these three out loud, tonight, in the car with the engine off if that is the only private place you have. You speak them because Christ is in you and you are in Him, and that union, not a testimony, is where a believer's authority to open her mouth comes from. Scripture is the ground under every line and the Holy Spirit is the one who carries them, so a whisper carries as far as a shout. What God does with them and when is entirely His, and they go up under not my will but Thine.

  1. Fourth night of hands on my back, you are honest love and I receive you, and you were never the thing that settles this. Scripture ties the new birth to God's own doing and to believing that Jesus is the Christ, and that is what I am standing on tonight.
  2. Fear that everybody in this room can see something missing in me, get off me now, in the name of Jesus. It is written that He saved us according to His own mercy and by the renewing of the Holy Spirit, so there is nothing here for me to produce and nothing here for you to hold over me.
  3. Father, You are the one who gives the new birth, and it is written that everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ has been born of God. I am saying that one sentence out loud tonight with nothing attached to it, and Your Spirit is carrying it while I put the fan down and go home.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
