Nine forty on a Thursday, and the house has finally gone quiet enough that he can hear the dishwasher change cycles.
Both kids are down. The little one took two tries. His wife fell asleep on the couch and he put the throw over her and left her there, because waking her would be a crime against the whole household. So it is him, the kitchen table, the overhead light on its lowest setting, and a form.
He printed it off the church website on Tuesday. Membership application, four pages, stapled crooked because he could not find the long stapler. Name. Address. Cell phone. Spouse. Children and dates of birth, which he filled in from memory and got right. Previous church. He is halfway down page two in eleven minutes and feeling good about himself, coffee going cold at his elbow with a ring soaking into page one.
Then line seven.
Date of conversion (approximate is fine).
He puts the pen down.
Approximate is fine. He reads it three times and every time it gets kinder and worse. Somebody on a committee wrote approximate is fine to take the pressure off, and it lands on the back of his neck like a hand, because approximate assumes there is something to be approximate to. A range. A season. Something with edges. He does not have edges. He has a nursery with a felt board, a father who prayed out loud in the car on the way to school, a summer camp he mostly remembers for the mosquitoes, and thirty one years of never once having been outside of any of it.
He tries writing 1998? and stops after the nine, because it is not true, and he is not going to put a number that is not true on a page he has to sign at the bottom.
So he sits there with the pen in his hand and the dishwasher humming, and the thought comes up the way it always comes up, quietly, with no drama in it at all: maybe the line is blank because there is nothing to write on it. Maybe everybody else in that building has a date and I am the one who has been going through the motions since I was four.
He does not say it out loud. He slides the form under the mail pile. He will get it out again tomorrow night and the line will still be there.
You know the line. Yours might be a form, or a question in a small group, or the two seconds after somebody says so when did you come to the Lord and turns to you with a warm, expectant face. And you know what moves in you when it comes. Not doubt about God, exactly. More like being asked for a receipt you were never handed.

Nobody remembers being born
Start with the plainest fact in the room, and it is a fact about every human being who has ever drawn breath: not one of us remembers it happening.
It was the most consequential eleven minutes of your life and there is no footage. No feeling. Nothing you could testify to under oath. We know it happened because somebody else was in the room, and somebody else wrote it down, and because here we all are, upright and arguing about it.
You were never the one holding the pen on your own birth record, and you were not asked for the date on that one either. Scripture puts that pen in a different hand entirely: the LORD records as He registers the peoples, and what He writes is not a timestamp, it is a place of origin. His Spirit is the one who lifts an ancient registry off a page and sets it down on a kitchen table at nine forty at night, and He has never once needed the applicant to supply the entry.
And of Zion it shall be said, "This one and that one were born in her"; for the Most High himself will establish her. The LORD records as he registers the peoples, "This one was born there."Psalm 87:5-6
Read what He writes. Not this one signed on the fourteenth. Not this one came forward in the summer of 1998. This one was born there. A place. A city. A birth. That is the whole entry, and the Most High keeps the book Himself.
You are looked for in a register God writes in His own hand, and it was already written in the language of a birth instead of the language of an anniversary. That is Psalm 87 and I am not stretching it, and it is the Holy Spirit, not a committee and not your recall, who bears witness to what is entered there. The form on your table is administration. Administration is good. It is not the register.
The wind does not sign the guest book
Now put that beside what Jesus actually said about it, because He picked the illustration on purpose and He picked one with no coordinates in it.
The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear its sound, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes. So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit.John 3:8
Hear the middle of that. You do not know where it comes from. That is not a warning label. That is the Lord's own description of what this looks like from inside a person, and He gave it to a scholar who wanted the mechanics.
You have His own account of how this feels from the inside, and it is the account of a man describing weather nobody can trace. John 3:8 puts the not knowing in the description before it was ever in you, and the Spirit who blows where He wishes is the one who chose that picture over a certificate.
And let me be careful with you here, because there is a second trap on this same road. The answer to a missing date is not a hunt for one. I am not sending you back through your childhood with a flashlight looking for a night that would settle it; that search has no floor. And a dramatic story would not help, because a story is a story and not a birth, and there are people with tremendous ones filling out that same form in that same building.
You are not standing in a shorter line than anybody else in that room, and you were never being scored against the person with the good testimony. It is written that God shows no partiality, and the same Spirit who moved on a man in a stadium is the one who moved on a four year old in a nursery with a felt board, and He does not file the two of them differently.
Who holds the pen
Here is the sentence that ends the argument, and John put it right at the front of his book, before Nicodemus ever walks on.
But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God, who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God.John 1:12-13
Four origins named and three ruled out. Not of blood, so not the family you were handed. Not of the will of the flesh, so not your own drive. Not of the will of man, so not a preacher, a counselor, a father praying in the car, or a committee with a stapler. But of God. One hand on the pen, and it is not yours and it never was.
You are not the author of this, you were never meant to be, and that is the best news on the page. His word says born of God and rules out every other origin by name, and the Holy Spirit is the one who does the work while a man sits at a table with cold coffee wondering how to phrase it.
So write what is true on line seven. No single date. Raised in it. I do not know. Draw a small line through it if that is the honest answer. You are free to leave that line true, and it is already settled that a blank on a church form has never once erased anything the LORD wrote in His own register. Psalm 87 says who keeps the book, and the Spirit of truth is not going to ask you to lie on page two to get onto page four.
Here is what happens now, tonight, at the table, with the form under the mail pile and the dishwasher on its second cycle.
You stop treating line seven as a verdict and start treating it as what it is: a box on a piece of paper, printed by somebody who meant well, that is asking for information the God of heaven never required and does not use.
You are held by a record you did not write and cannot lose, and it is already finished in the hand that wrote it. Psalm 87 has the LORD Himself doing the registering, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that ancient book present tense in a kitchen, so that a man with a pen can put it down and breathe.
And the honesty you would not give up tonight is not stubbornness. It is the right instinct. A man who refuses to write a number he does not believe is a man who takes the truth seriously, and that is not the profile of somebody going through the motions.
You have every reason to leave that line empty and sign your name at the bottom anyway, because it is written that God is the one who began this and not you. His Spirit is doing the confirming, not your paperwork, and what He does with a blank line is His business. He has been running that register a long time.
Declare this over yourself
Say these three out loud over the table before you turn the light off. The standing to speak them is not something you worked up: you are in Christ and Christ is in you, and that is what makes a sentence spoken over cold coffee carry weight. Scripture is the ground under every one of them and the Holy Spirit is the one carrying them, which is why a tired voice at nine forty at night carries them just as well as a loud voice on a Sunday. Speak to what is on the table, then to what is underneath it, then to Him, and hand Him the result under not my will, but Thine.
- Blank line seven on a church membership form, you are staying honest tonight. Scripture says the LORD records as He registers the peoples and writes down this one was born there, Psalm 87:6, and that entry was never mine to make.
- Fear that says a man with no date has been faking it since he was four, get off this table, in the name of Jesus. It is written that this birth is not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man but of God, John 1:13, and the Holy Spirit is not waiting on my paperwork before He does His own work.
- Lord, You keep the register Yourself, and it is written that You write down this one was born there in Your own hand. So I am leaving line seven true, and I am handing You the part I cannot fill in.
