Nineteen Days Behind

The number is nineteen and it is in a small red circle, and it is the first thing she sees when the app opens.

Six forty in the morning. Kitchen. The heat has just kicked on and the vent is ticking. Her sweater is the one with the stretched cuffs, and there is a mug of coffee going cold at her elbow because she got the coffee first and then made the mistake of picking up the phone.

The plan is a good plan. Her church picked it in January and half the small group is doing it. It has a nice green icon and a verse in a serif font every morning and a little chart at the end of each week. On day one she read it at this table and thought, this year.

She is on day forty seven. The plan is on day sixty six.

She scrolls up. There they are, the unread ones, nineteen tidy rows going back up the screen in a paler gray than the read ones, each with a chapter reference and a duration in minutes. Four minutes. Five minutes. Six. She does the arithmetic without meaning to, the way you always do: that is about an hour and a half of reading, which is not actually very much, which somehow makes it worse.

Third time this year. January, obviously. Then the reset in April, when she cleared the whole thing and started fresh and got eleven days in. Now this.

She knows exactly what happens next, because it has happened twice. She will tell herself she is going to catch up over the weekend. Saturday will arrive with its own weather. By Tuesday the number will be twenty six, and around the end of the month she will delete the plan and start a new one, and the relief of the empty chart will last about nine days.

Downstairs somebody drops something. The heat vent ticks. She looks at the red nineteen and thinks the thought she has not said out loud to anybody: I do not think I am a person who can do this.

You know the number. Yours might be in a red circle, or a bookmark that has not moved since March, or a hardback plan on a shelf with the ribbon still at Leviticus. And you know the arithmetic, and how quick it is, and what it costs you every single morning to do it before you have had a mouthful of coffee.

Peter never mentions a schedule

There is one place in the New Testament where somebody tells brand new believers how to grow, and there is no plan in it anywhere.

As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby.1 Peter 2:2

Look at the machinery in that sentence. Desire. Milk. Grow thereby. The growing is fastened to the feeding and to nothing else. Not to the volume, not to the frequency, not to a chart, not to whether a person is on the same page as the rest of their small group.

You are growing by the milk and you were never told to grow by the calendar, and one is Scripture and the other is a product decision. That is the actual grammar of 1 Peter 2:2, where the word thereby points backwards at the milk, and it is the Spirit who makes the word food rather than information, which is why a paragraph honestly eaten this morning is nourishment and nineteen skipped rows are simply nineteen skipped rows.

And notice who he is talking to. Newborns. A newborn has no plan, no chart, no sense of being behind, and no capacity whatsoever to be. It has hunger, and it feeds, and it grows, and the growing is invisible to it. Nobody has ever handed an infant a burndown chart.

You have the appetite that verse is built around, and you were reading the red number as a verdict when it is a counter. His word gives the instruction as desire rather than complete, and it is His Spirit who puts the hunger there in the first place, so the fact that you opened the app at six forty this morning is the thing the verse is actually describing.

Nobody was ever able to catch up on manna

Here is the part that I think will take the weight off your shoulders, and it comes from a wilderness and a very specific piece of engineering.

God fed a nation for forty years, and He fed them daily. Not weekly, not in a delivery they could store. Every morning there was enough on the ground for that day, and the instruction was to gather what each person needed for that day, and no more.

Notwithstanding they hearkened not unto Moses; but some of them left of it until the morning, and it bred worms, and stank.Exodus 16:20

That is not a punishment story. That is a design specification. The stuff would not keep. You could not get ahead on it, you could not bank a surplus against a bad week, and there was no such thing as being nineteen days behind on manna, because yesterday's was never available and tomorrow's was not yet on the ground.

Jesus put the same shape into the prayer He taught. Give us this day our daily bread. This day. He could have taught us to ask for the month, and He did not, because He was describing a God who prefers to meet people every morning rather than resupply them quarterly.

You are on a daily arrangement rather than a schedule you fell behind on, and it is already yours this morning at this table. It is written give us this day, and the same Spirit who put bread on the ground before the camp woke is the one who has something on the ground today, which means the only portion that was ever addressed to you is the one with today's date on it.

So the nineteen rows are not a debt. Nobody is owed them. They are a schedule that some kind person at your church made in January, and a schedule is a trellis. It is there to hold a growing thing up. It was never the growing thing.

Third time this year

I want to talk about the restarts, because they keep getting counted against her and they are the best evidence in the room.

Three times this year, a person who is tired and busy and has a life sat down and set the whole thing up again. Nobody made her. There is no prize. She was not being watched. She did it because something in her wanted the word, and she did it again in April after it did not work in January, and she did it a third time, and this morning at six forty she opened the app before she opened anything else.

That is hunger. Peter says desire, and desire is what makes a person start over on a Tuesday in April with no audience.

You are looking at three pieces of evidence and calling them three failures, and it is already settled which one Scripture calls the sign of life. 1 Peter 2:2 names desire as the mark of a newborn, and it is the Spirit, not the discipline, who authors an appetite like that, so what your April looks like from heaven is not what it looks like from your kitchen.

I work in music, and every teacher I have ever met says the same thing about practice: the person who plays a little most days ends up somewhere the person who plays four hours in March never gets to. But I am not going to turn that into a rule for you, because rules are exactly what has been eating your mornings. The point is not that small and daily is the technique that works. The point is that God set it up small and daily in the first place, for people with tickings vents and cold coffee and someone dropping things downstairs.

You have a pace that was designed around an ordinary life, and you were handed it rather than earning it. Scripture put the manna on the ground every single morning for forty years without once asking the camp to make up a missed day, and the Spirit who fed them then has not adopted a stricter policy since.
